Mel Tillis passed away on this date in 2017. Mel was CMA Entertainer of the Year in 1976. He had numerous hits as an artist but wrote classics for other artists like “Detroit City” & “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love To Town”. I’ll be forever grateful to Mel for giving me my first break in Nashville when he signed me to his publishing company. Mel’s daughter Pam asked me to co-host Mel’s memorial at the Ryman with Ralph Emery and i was honored to do so. #songwriter #countrymusic #nashville #legend | B

Mel Tillis scored a late-career hit in 1979 with “Coca Cola Cowboy,” a cheeky, smooth-sung tune about heartbreak and regret. Known for his stutter in speech but silky delivery in song, Tillis turned the track into a number one country single and even performed it in Clint Eastwood’s film Every Which Way But Loose, cementing it as one of his signature numbers. #country | Truck Stop Country

Who’s Julie was Mel Tillis’s 1968 hit on Kapp Records. It’s a clever heartbreak song about a man so wrapped up in someone new he’s forgotten the name of the woman he’s with. Backed by that classic Nashville sound, it became one of Tillis’s early Top 10 country singles and helped kick off his rise from songwriter to star. #country | Truck Stop Country
