President Donald Trump’s threat of a 50% tariff on a wide range of Canadian goods will not take effect at 12:01 a.m. ET, he announced hours before, sparing roughly $20 billion worth of imports.

New 50% US tariffs on certain Canadian goods took effect on Saturday, pushing the two countries closer to a possible tit-for-tat trade fight.

The tariffs took effect early Saturday and cover a relatively small share of Canada’s exports to the United States.
